When to Pay Attention to Packaging
December 5th, 2011Getting the gift shopping completed is only half the battle, once you have found them and bought them, you have to consider how to send them. While buying online has the advantage of shipping, say you buy something unique from a craft fair or antique show. How would you ship it?If you have a lot of things you could place them in individual boxes, carefully padded and place those boxes together into a larger one. One thing you do not want to over look is the role of the humble edge protector in protecting your investment. Many people don’t realize how much protection jumbo edge protectors provide. Therefore, you should consider custom packaging solutions even if you ship from home.
This might not apply as much for small packages or things in low volume. A single shirt can be easily shipped in a padded envelope, for example. Jewelry should always be carefully packed, even if it is included inside a padded package with a card. Shipping small or lightweight items through the normal post might even get you better service then if you used a private shipper. There are limits to this practice, of course. Normal post does not work for food items, or liquids of any sort. Things of that nature should be send through a different ground carrier instead of the normal post.
If you bought prepackaged items through the mail then you don’t need to worry about edge protector, or jumbo edge protectors because those merchants have custom packaging solutions and will make sure your packages arrive to the right locations themselves. Same thing with online shopping. No, where you need to think about shipping is if you want to send homemade baked or canned items. Since the rules change from year to to year, you will want to consult with the post or shipping group you select to use on what the current rules are. Even so there are a few additional common sense things to follow.
First make sure that you select inner boxes for each item that secures the contents. If you are packing delicate goods in baskets that have been shrink wrapped you may want to use cardboard dividers to ensure they do not move around in the larger box. Items in tins can be wrapped in tissue to prevent scratching, as the tin should provide enough protection for the contents. Securing jars or glass containers is perhaps a little more tricky, as both the heavy glass and the interior contents needs to be protected. Consider using foam and bubble wrap inside inner boxes and then mark the outer box as containing delicate breakables.
No matter how you complete your Christmas gift giving, shipping is increasingly part of the picture. It simply is not practical to buy non-breakable items for every gift, and sometimes those gifts are unique or hand made. In moments like these it is very important to ensure that they reach the person they are for by paying attention to how they are packaged for shipping.
